Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah aged 10 years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. When she was 8 when her mother gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to delicate and kind in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. She sang "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah became a beatboxer for the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was one of the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and signed Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
